JUST KIDDING | President Duterte retracts statement on marijuana use

December 3, 2018 — President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday admitted his use of marijuana — but retracted it a couple of hours later.

In an ambush interview after his second event in Malacañang, the president said he was only joking.

“Of course it was a joke. But nobody can stop me for just doing my style. That’s my style, it’s too late to change…If I want to joke, I will joke. Kung maniwala kayo, gago kayo,” he added.

During his speech at an earlier event, the chief executive divulged that it was marijuana that helped him to manage his participation in the hectic Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Singapore last month.

“It’s a killing activity, my age ako hindi masyado kasi nag-mamarijuana ako eh para magising,” Duterte said in his speech at the awarding ceremony of the ASEAN National Organizing Council in Malacañang.

Prior to the statement, Duterte aired his sentiments on the planning of the activity-filled summit, saying it was impossible for leaders his age to attend all the functions.

“You know we start at 8:30 in the morning and we end up almost 10 (p.m.), and it’s every thirty minutes. Baka akala nitong ASEAN Secretariat boy scout kami. ‘Di ko kaya yan,” Duterte said.

“I dont know how to reconfigure the style… [I only take up] the most urgent, most immediate [meetings] pero yung iba di ko na kaya. Pangit pa ng mga ulam,” he said, adding his displeasure at the food served during the entire event..

Marijuana, though accepted in certain countries for its medicinal benefits, is considered an illegal substance in the Philippines.
